Guns in School: Betsy DeVos Testimony on School Safety Falls Short

Just in case you missed it, US Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos testified before the US Senate Labor – HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee on June 5, 2018.  Vice-Chairman of the committee, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) questioned Secretary Devos about the work of the President’s Commission on School Safety, and asked “will the commission look at firearms as it relates to gun violence in our schools.”  To the surprise of many, DeVos answered, “that is not a part of the commission’s charge, per se.”  The Secretary added, “We are studying the issue of school safety and how to keep our children safe at school?  Perplexed, Leahy pressed on to point out that the study of school safety without consideration of guns falls short of what is needed to prevent more killings at US schools.
